Smoothwall are proud to be supporting International Women’s Day this Thursday 8th March 2018.
The theme for this years International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress, encouraging women and men to call for action and to progress towards gender parity. We will be uniting as a business to show our support, and are calling upon our colleagues, friends and networks to do the same.
We’re delighted on this day to launch our new Tech Inclusion Programme, which aims to address the gender disparity issue, particularly in the tech sector. Currently, only 17% of employees in the UK tech sector are women, and this is something we think needs radically addressing. Our Tech Inclusion programme concentrates on three work streams: inspiring young people, addressing gender disparity, and supporting women at work. We understand we’re not going to be able to achieve equality overnight. But every pledge, challenge and commitment by individuals and organisations help to drive change. There are a number of ways you can start having an impact in your organisation. These include celebrating female role models, mentoring, tackling recruitment bias, addressing the gender pay gap, creating better benefits for women and driving awareness of issues.
When it comes to celebrating female role models, a recent survey by PwC found that 83% of female students were unable to think of a female role model in technology. Lack of role models is also a big factor as to why women don’t look to progress their careers in technology. We want to change this, and therefore along with launching our Tech Inclusion Programme, our first pledge for International Womens Day will be to celebrate female role models in Smoothwall.
Every month we will bring you a blog highlighting the achievements of our very own women in tech. We will be kicking this off next week with an interview with our Head of Operations, Rebecca Woodhead.
