Organised by the National Cyber Security Alliance, October marks the 14th year anniversary of National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
Also known as NCSAM, National Cyber Security Awareness Month helps to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity by engaging and educating businesses, educational organisations and the public on how to build resilience and stay safe online.
This year’s theme is ‘Our Shared Responsibility’ as each and every one of us has a responsibility to ensure that our online lives are kept safe and secure. Critical for anyone using the internet, each year NCSAM highlights the overall message of STOP.THINK.CONNECT™, providing everyone with easy-to-follow actionable advice to help safeguard their digital lifestyles:
STOP: make sure security measures are in place.
THINK: about the consequences of your actions and behaviours online.
CONNECT: and enjoy the internet.
As a growing digitalised society, the internet touches almost all aspects of our lives, and there’s no doubt that it’s changing the way that we live and work. Although modern technology continues to have its benefits by helping improve communication, efficiency and productivity, it poses a great risk to security with data breaches, identity theft, phishing and cyberbullying just a few examples of cyber incidents we now face. Whether it be at home or at work, it is vital to continuously learn and practice good cybersecurity habits in order to protect yourself and your organisation from cybersecurity threats. From the break room to the boardroom it is essential for organisations to create a culture of cybersecurity which inherits a shared responsibility amongst all employees.
