Working in partnership with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), Friendly WiFi is an accreditation scheme initiated by the government to encourage businesses to be able to provide users with a safe WiFi service on their public WiFi.
For businesses to become accredited, their public WiFi needs to meet a certain standard of filtering in order to be able to block out any harmful content, particularly in areas where children might be present. Friendly WiFi approved locations around the UK have proven to successfully block access to pornography, images and videos of child sexual abuse and web pages known to host indecent images of children.
As a specialist developer and provider of web filtering and internet security, Smoothwall are proud to share the same mission as the Friendly WiFi scheme and be part of a pioneering initiative that is helping to protect internet users around the UK. Part of our overall goal is to keep children safe online, which is why we also partner with the Internet Watch Foundation and regularly update our lists to help eradicate child sexual abuse imagery from the internet.
Claire Daniels, Online Safety Ambassador at Smoothwall, says:
“Online safety for children is becoming an increasingly severe problem every year with exposure to pornography and online abuse just some of the most concerning issues of this generation. It’s therefore absolutely vital for businesses who provide public WiFi to support the need for safeguarding online content and provide a safe online experience for their users.
Smoothwall are proud to have their filtering standards recognised by Friendly WiFi and hope that more organisations become part of the world’s first standard in public WiFi safety, to demonstrate their social responsibility and help keep children and young people safe online.”
